Below is a montage of famous lines from the movie, including the “He’s been absent nine times” line spoken by the principal to Ferris’s mother (there’s a decent amount of profanity – in case you happen to be sitting in a cubicle).  Here’s the reason John Hughes made Ferris absent nine (as opposed to eight or ten) times:

A passionate Beatles fan, Hughes makes multiple references to them and John Lennon in the script (“Nine” times, a quote from John Lennon’s God). During filming, Hughes “listened to The White Album every single day for fifty-six days.”
